Hey Guys,
I am new to this, and I have run into a problem. I've done a couple kits and I want to move on to crafting my own beer but I can't get ingredients at a reasonable price. I live in South Western Ontario, and essentially the only Brewing supplies I can get my hands on are ingredients that You-Brew stores sell.

Does anyone have any recommendations for online resources? Or a Store in London, Toronto or Detroit?

Guard Well,

Brad

you look like you're closee to the US border. I have a coworker from Canada who orders stuff(not homebrew but other merchandise online) and has it shipped to a dedicated drop box just over the border since it's supposedly cheaper to pay tariffs driving across the border than it is to mail order stuff from the states. However, the people I know are in Winnipeg so I can't recommend any drop boxes in your area, but I would guess they have the same setup there somewhere. If that's an option you could just order from any online retailer and you'd be good to go.

I'm in Chatham and do most of my ordering through Canadian Home Brew Supplies. If you know any other all-grain brewers we could always look at doing bulk buys to save some money. I've been trying to compile a list of home brewers close to Chatham-Kent. The SOB is great but is mostly Toronto-based.

There was a thread about this two days ago, do a search and you will find a bunch of responses already.

I am lucky to have a great homebrew store here in Edmonton so I haven't ever had to order grains online.
However for bulk hops I can't reccomend hopsdirect.com enough, their hops are great, their prices are dirt cheap, their "pound" usually weighs it at around 18 oz. Even with shipping to Canada prices are usually around $1/oz which is about 1/3 the cost my LHBS charges. Make sure to ask for USPS shipping and NOT UPS however as I hear UPS can screw you on brokerage charges.

I see you're in Windsor - I'm in Essex. I get my supplies from Adventures in Homebrewing in Taylor, Michigan - www.homebrewing.org. Great selection, great prices and a very knowledgeable staff. They're located just off Telegraph and I94, a very short trip from Windsor. Takes me about 45 minutes each way from Essex.

As for Canadian sources, there is nothing close to us. Canadian Homebrew Supplies in Brampton (www.homebrew-supplies.ca) and Homebrew Gear Canada in Annan (?) www.homebrewgearcanada.com are the only ones with a decent selection and "reasonable" prices. The local "make your own wine" shops have some supplies and hardware but nothing in the way of actual homebrewing ingredients or equipment.

Cheers!
K

So you're in Windsor? We have a ton of great LHBS's in the Detroit Metro Area. Adventures in Homebrewing is probably closest to the border.

I have been buying supplies at AHB for a few years now. Agreed excellent staff and very knowledgable. I hav'nt found any local or other suppliers that can compete with the pricing. I usually buy 4 bags of 2 row at a time to cut down on my travel. The frieght and milling fees these other suppliers in canada charge make it uneconomical. The money I saved I built a malt mill.
I have also bought some pin lock corny supplies from a fella that has an add on kijiji.

Hey Skinner,

I don't wish to be a shameless self-promoter ;), but we are close to you, shipping out of Windsor.

No offense to our friends to the south.. but if we wish to have a homebrewing scene in Canada, we need to support our own LHBS. There are a few good options.

If I had known about the WIndsor store I would have shared the link. I'm glad to know one is there, though sadly a lot of Canadian HB-ers don't. A lot cross over to our side.

So don't make me get all...

On you. ;)

Sorry to revive an old thread, but I'm in need of some help here. I'm new to All-Grain brewing, but I'm having a heck of a time finding a supplier of ingredients. I'm in Belleville, and all the LHBS are extract only. There's a store in Kingston that does sell a limited selection of grain and hops, but in small quantities and at high prices (1kg/2.2lb bags of 2-row for $3.99 a bag, which would cost roughly $91 + tax for 50 lbs).

I tried the Canadian on-line stores listed, but mashingheads is out of business and www.Homebrewgearcanada.com has it's site under "maintenance". I found HB Gear Canada's facebook page and tried emailing and calling them, but there was no joy, so I'm thinking they're out of business. Someone must sell to the Canadian market, so any help pointing me where to buy reasonably priced grain would be really appreciated.

Thanks for any help.

While I've never ordered, both Hop Dawgs and Brewers Pantry were pretty quick at getting back to my queries. Strikes me as a good sign from either.

I live in rural Nova Scotia, so my options are (1) pick up ingredients when I get to Halifax every 3 or 4 months, (2) Order online and pay $5 shipping for a $3 pack of yeast or (3) brew Cooper's kits that I can find locally and drink Propeller when I want something really good. All grain isn't even on the radar at this point.

Thanks for all the replies, I figured the forums would have some suggestions. 6:30 am and I'm doing some online shopping over my morning coffee! Looking at the Whitby store now to see what they have since I'd rather drive and buy the grain instead of shipping it.

Hopdawgs for sure and Ontariobeerkegs is getting more and more into ingredients everyday!
