I ordered a bunch of cheap voltmeters from BuyInCoins (8 for $20) intending to hack them for use as temperature displays. They haven't arrived yet, but luckily in the meantime somebody else has done all the hard work of figuring out how to convert them to general purpose displays:

Non-cheapskates can get a purpose built I2C controlled display from Adafruit that will do the same thing for $10 each.
