So I built myself a MLT out of a Rubbermaid 10 gal Home Depot cooler and brewed my first batch in it last night. I was very impressed. Not a degree lost.

We brewed an oatmeal stout. This was my 5th time brewing and since we just ran out of the oatmeal stout I made the first time I brewed, SWMBO requested we make more. I tweaked the recipe a little bit and used a different yeast just to see how changing this and that affects the final product.

Below is the recipe and some pics of us from brew day.

Cheers!

Curious what your efficiency was? Im guessing you did a fly sparge. I have been batch sparging with a 48 qt cooler and cant get above 70%.

I batch sparge as well. Not sure if I have all the settings correct in my software but its in the high 70s low 80s. You really need to make sure your sparge water brings your temp up to 170F and that you stir it well and let let it sit. I let my sparge sit for 10 mins at 170F then drain. Also, even if you have to boil longer, increase your water to grain ratio to around 2qt/lb for your sparge to get all those sugars into solution. If you are already doing these things, you might be under/overestimating something in your calculations.

Cheers!

Thanks for the tips. I will up my mash ratio a bit to 2qt/lb. Nice pictures, looks like you guys had a fun time. Cheers

SWMBO used to work at a brew pub (Thirsty Dog) and actually lost her taste for beer. She has a couple go to beers for the rare occasion she does have one. Just so happens that she loves my oatmeal stout. Lucky me!
