So my first offering was a tad too easy,
at least no one faulted my rhyming as cheesy.
I guess I need to be more sly,
so here is another try:

I move, I step,
as silent as snow.
I grow, I flick,
from lit candle wick.
I leap, I bound,
yet don't leave the ground.
I've arms, I've hair,
less substantial than air.
I pass, I go,
with someone I know.
I dash, I tumble,
but it's never my fumble.

This form I'm aware is friend nor foe
When I'm alone in the night he never shows
But when I'm alone and it's bright he never goes!

As much as I try to talk to and get to know
I never get closer to my close companion SHADOW.

You sir may stand tall and erect,
for you are quite correct.

Now since I must arise at three,
it is off to bed for me!

Hopefully some bright and insightful fan
will put forth a riddle to befuddle Dan!

Here I sit and here I play
Lounging around all goddam day.
If I had thumbs I'd pay some bills
by working and earning with my skills.
Craftful and clever and clearly bright
I'll track you and stalk you through the night.
But thumbless I am so here I stay
Lounging around all goddam day.
Feed me and clean me and let me lay
Lounging around all goddam day.

What am I?

Judging by the three in my home,
I'd guess not a gnome,
Nor a bat,
But most certainly a cat!

I've used this one in my class:

How many people must be gathered together in a room, before you can be certain that there is a greater than 50/50 chance that at least two of them have the same birthday?

Quick and very close
here's the answer, toast:

Only twenty-three people need be in the room, a surprisingly small number. The probability that there will not be two matching birthdays is then, ignoring leap years, 365x364x363x...x343/365 over 23 which is approximately 0.493. this is less than half, and therefore the probability that a pair occurs is greater than 50-50. With as few as fourteen people in the room the chances are better than 50-50 that a pair will have birthdays on the same day or on consecutive days.

Probability of two people sharing a birthday is 1/365.
For three people, there are three ways of getting a shared birthday
AB, AC, or BC
For four people, there are 6 ways.
For five, there are 10.
The progression goes 0,1,3,6,10,15,21,28,36,45,55,66,78,91,105,120,136,153, 171, 190
Half of 365 is 182.5, so the probability is greater than 50/50 when you get to 190 sharing combinations from 20 people.

I'm with emjay. I get 20.

Ok fine.
I will make up a riddle.
Somewhere in this riddle
will be the word "sine."

It will be mathematical.
It will make your head ache
It will make your bowels ache
and still be grammatical.

Here it is, for all to see:
If three elves gave ten dollars for a $30 cab
and the cabby said, "wait! it's a $25 tab!"
but then felt a little greedy

And then, ceremoniously,
gave a dollar back to each elf
and kept a whole two dollars himself,
here's the problem mathematically:

9 + 9 + 9 = 27
plus the two he kept himself = 29
twenty nine, oh, sine, oh 29!
where is the lost dollar! Has it gone to heaven?

Cathedral, thank you for continuing our nerdy game
I know the answer, perhaps is been asked before, though not the same
I hope our regular riddle'ers rejoin us soon
I want an an answer and riddle by tomorrow high noon...(Or a week from Thursday)...((whatsay))

How many roads must a man walk down...
Oh wait, that's been asked before.

It was the best of times, It was the worst of times...
Blah blah blah, such a bore.

I can't seem to think of anything new.
My (thinking) chicken's (thoughts) have all been plucked.

All I can think of is:

"Two men walked into a bar,
and the third man ducked."

Quack, quack.

Love to play this rhyming riddling game
Thank you LRB for not letting the thread go lame
I apologize if this next one has been played before
I just recently came back in through the side door

They are seen with clothes and with some faces
Telephones use them in many places.
When there is cutting, people can get mad
If you should cross one, fighting could be had.
Just get out of one, it could mean trouble
When seen on the road they could be double.
Football will use them, they're part of the game
Fish should avoid them, they won't be the same.

Dan, I am glad you are back and toeing the Line
I like your riddle, but then I'm drunk on whine
I think many will solve this one
Nonetheless its lots of fun

I could see the answer found within lab rats rhyme.
I won't Hold it against him for it isn't a crime
I thought about the answer for quite some time
But found it as I heard Mr. cash sing

Walk The LINE.

This reminds me of another one early on
That's the only clue I'm going to pass on

It's very rigid, not unlike a box
Where it does reside there's no need for clocks.
When it is in use it does not show it
Those who need it never will know it.

It was not your intention to give a clue
But if I'm right about this riddle your statement isn't true

I hope you do not think I am scoffing
But I believe the answer you're seeking is a coffin.

Maybe I'm making up for lost time
This one may not be sublime
But it is still quite fun
Don't bring out Bing guns

I'd be penniless if not for my fame
Full liberation I once did proclaim.
Every eighty years is how I kept score
You'll find my address had but seven more.

This is a riddle more for me than you
What do you think my Coat of Arms do?
If I'd have been born in 1900
A WASP my name would be numbered

Wait. There is Blue and Gold which represents my Navy ... but when was this thing made?

Urgh... It makes me all crazy.

Google image thinks its the Hayes family crest: http://www.houseofnames.com/hayes-family-crest

The three stars must represent something across the chest.

I'm thinking about starting a new Thread. "Man vs The Machine" Machine.

Well you know.

Believe me there are days I just want to climb on my bike and ride! I dont belong to any clubs and am to old, got to much family in my life to do that, Just need to ride sometimes.

This one will take me more time
I don't have a clever rhyme
I love to lose myself on the road
I've seen too many squished like a toad
There are dozens if crosses
marking our losses
yet just one I watched dropped
across the pavement smeared our loss

Not my favorite but worth a stab:
If you had three apples and four oranges in one hand and four apples and three oranges in the other hand, what would you have?

I would say man..

I have really big hands!

Not sure Dave answered LRB's question
But answer he gave was a pretty great suggestion
Since The Rat gave a big thumbs up at that
I think LRB was tipping his hat
and saying its good to move on to the next one
if so, here is my riddling question

When fat it is slow, when thin it is fast
The longer the day the more it will last.
Tall when it is young, short as it gets old
It's gone with the wind when it gets too bold.

A very good riddle Dan,
So many answers almost work
the correct one I cannot lurk. (?)
I'll keep pondering until I can

edit: I think I have a solution, or a Flicker of one
if so, the second line is quite cleverly done
