Without Use, How Long Will CO2 Cannisters Last?

I live an hour away from a CO2 recharging place and am thinking of getting a second tank as backup. If left unused, how long will it take before a CO2 tank loses its charge? My concern is getting a tank and having it lose significant charge over 3 or 4 months before I use it.
 
Assuming the valve is properly maintained, a CO2 cylinder will keep for years and years and years and decades. If you're losing a significant quantity of gas in a few months, the tank is broken.
