Ball valve and thermometer singeing.

Hey all, I bought a couple 10 gallon Mega pots from NB and had them drill holes for the valve and thermo. After a couple of brews I have been singeing the valve and thermometers. Has anyone else had this problem? I assumed this wouldnt happen since NB drilled the holes for me. I am using a banjo burner. Anyway I am pissed that I'm ruining a couple $40 thermometers.

Are you letting the flames lap up around the bottom of the kettle.

If yes, turn it down.

ditto, your flame should not come around the bottom of your pot.

What's being damaged, especially on the valve?

No the flames aren't coming over the side, as soon as I noticed what was goin on I turned the heat down. just the rubber sleeve over the ball valve handle is spontaniously catchin on fire, not that big of a deal but annoying. I'm just frusterated, I dont think I'm using excessive heat, the last brew I did I barely had a rolling boil cause I was afraid to kick up the heat.

A simple heat shield would really help. You can make one out of some aluminum flashing.

Also, you can replace the valve handle wrap with a piece of silicone tubing.

+1 on a heat shield, you can even use a piece of aluminum foil.

Burning the rubber off seems pretty common around here.
