I'm using my aluminum stockpot as a cleaning vessel for bottles, etc. with oxyclean, and it quickly developed a deep black stain up to the water level, which I'm assuming is aluminum oxide. Is this a problem, or just unsightly?

Oxiclean and Aluminum don't play well together, buy a rubbermaid container or a crappy homer bucket to clean bottles in.

+1 on the cheap bucket. For about $1 more, you can buy a white food-grade 5 gallon bucket at Lowes.

Oxy is OK to clean aluminum, but you don't want it soaking in there at a high concentration for an extended time. For soaking/de-labeling bottles, our kitchen sinks work fine.

Not a problem just looks bad

An old farmers trick...boil some water and cream of tarter....It will make your pot look brand new
