How aggressive should the vortex be on my stir plate?

Should I just ramp it up and let it hit the stir bar, and if not, how vigorous should it be?
 
Too much can generate too much heat, just enough to keep the yeast suspended and pull some O2 in
 
I let it suck in some air. I want to see small bubbles of air being swirled around the starter.
