You're a brave man, orfy. It doesn't look like there's much of the tree to climb that's not covered in vegetation.

The backyard looks friggin' fantastic, I must say.

Yeah, a nice little oasis you have there.

Does anybody have photos of vines growing horizontally along a fence?
I'm trying to decide if I want to set them up running horizontally along a wood fence or if I should attach some long poles to the fence with stringers and go vertical.

My father has a wooden fence that he lets his hops (which bear no cones :( ) climb up. They weave in and out of the points at the top and along the uppermost horizontal part, and go both ways. They don't get quite enough sun, which I think is why they don't bear much, but the bines still get 15-20' long.

If you didn't have a big herb garden in front of the fence like Dad does, it would be fairly easy to harvest them because they wouldn't be too high.

However, the backside of the leaves may not get enough air, so you'd be at higher risk of mildew.

Orfy, I love that back yard. It is something to aspire to.
I keep trying to figure out how to grow hops in my yard but there really isn't any part of it that get a decent amount of sun. Too many large trees shading the yard:( . I have to grow my tomatoes on my roof.
Luckily my parents don't live too far away and they have a good sized farm with plenty of room for hops. I just need to work out some kind of watering system. I'm thinking of setting up some rain barrels to collect water of of the pole barn.

Is that a few rosemary plants? I have one thats 1-2 feet tall by 1.5 ft wide.

Im planning to grow (2 of Crystal, Mt. Hood, & Sterling) in my back yard and hope for the best. I don't as much light back there as I wish... But if can def catch a nice sunset straight into where I will be growing them. About 5 huge trees in the back and my house blocks the southern side. The ground should be amazing due to years (15+) of compost back there :rockin: So we will see if I can add to the porn throughout the year.

How is the weather for growing hops here? I know for me at least last year it was quite humid most of the summer and with the lack of rain and water ban I was surprised my "garden" was flourishing. *Cough*watering can*cough* Im hoping the water ban will get lifted this summer!!!!

Yeas that is rosemary. I had 5 plants but I needed to move them and lost two. They smell great give all year round green and you can eat it.
I put hem in at 6 inches high and they are now nearly 3 foot. I have one on the alloment as well. I like to inter plant them with lavenders.

You can water a "garden" so go for it. Mine are more for fun than for supporting the hobby.

Would a rain collection barrel be feasible for your area? They can't enforce a ban on water you have collected only on the public supply I would imagine.

You cant use water from the outside pipes. BUT if it comes from indoors you can (don't ask why bc they both come from the same source). Rain barrels might work due to its a collection thing.

But our lakes that supply water to use I believe were 50% dry if not worse. It made it all over national news as a crisis over the winter saying we had 3 months or so left of water.

heh sorry for hijacking

I trust your dogs aren't interested in the hops orfy? Hops are toxic to dogs (but I suppose eveyone already knows this) I want to grow some hops in my garden, but I'm worried cos we have a new pup who eats anything and everything in the garden!

Sorry if I'm preaching to the converted, been a long while since I posted on these forums.

Hey Blighty.
Nice pup. Is it pedigree? Looks it. Mine are muts.

Yeah thanks. The hop cones are higher than the dogs can reach plus they have plenty to eat and apart from grass I've never seen them eat any vegitation.

I've had hops for 4 years now and no problems.

Yeah, she's a border collie. Mad as a box of frogs, more energy than Saudi Arabia and as intelligent as Einstein, she's a fantastic dog and I'd hate to kill her with my hobby! Do the hops "drop" at all? If they don't, then maybe it could be safer than I think..

These pictures have me hot to grow hops, but SWMBO would harvest my tender buds, I'm afraid. One of my main brewbuddies put some hops on his house a few years ago. Let's see... that would've been about two years before his divorce. Alas.

Orfy, you have a first-rate beer-sipping yard there.

Those pics have got me ready to grow some hops! I can almost smell them from here!

Hmm... Hops are toxic to dogs, and so is dark chocolate... I wonder if anyone has ever tried to put hops into chocolate. Sounds like it might make a nice treat (not for dogs).

I will soon have pictures of my soon to be hop garden.... just raked off most of the mulch the other day.

OOO anyone know of any safe to use weed killer stuff for a hop garden? I haven't looked outside in the backyard in years to see if the weeds are still rampant over the spring-fall but in winter time the place is just trees.
