Building IC for keggle. Mainly will do 5 gallon batches. 50' 1/2" copper coil. Considering putting in a whirlpool like on the Mr Malty site. I don't have a pump, is a whirlpool necessary? Is it just as effective to boil a spoon in the pot and occasionally hand stir the wort around the keggle with the IC running? Are there high temp submersible pumps you could just sit in the keggle and run? What do you think?

The constant and vigorous flow from the pumped wort greatly expedites the chill. A spoon creating a whirlpool is better than nothing, but the pump forced whirlpool is much more effective. I don't believe there is any type of less expensive submersible pump that would perform the whirlpool. A $99 Chugger pump is the way to go for this operation.
