Mash Tun Conversion - 1/4" nipples too small?

I bought all the stuff to do a 5 gal mini mash cooler today, but when I was at the store the 1/4" barbs and 1/4" beverage tubing looked like what I needed. Now that I am home it seems like everyone is using 3/8

Is the 1/4 too restrictive to the point I should return it?
 
back to the depot for me then :)

I use 1/2" nipples, which means that the barb is like 3/8"... but it is called a 1/2" nipples.
