Didn't want to hijack the homebrew comp thread any longer.

Speaking of the March in Montreal comp.
People who have access to St. Ambroise Oatmeal Stout sure are lucky.

I had one that a fellow club member brought with him when he visited
my province a few weeks ago. I didn't know a stout could taste so good.
Liquid black gold. I have since asked that my local liquor store (only place
imports are sold) carry it.

I have the recipie and am waiting on some speciality malts so I can try
my hand at replicating this necter.

My local pub has that on tap. It's always the first pint I have when I get there. :D If you ever get to try it on tap, DEFINITELY do; the bottle version is excellent but you really haven't tasted it until it's through a stout faucet with beer gas. ;)

I go past the McAuslan brewery quite often, Peter McAuslan is one of the unofficial mentors and a great supporter of the MontreAlers brew club- he started as a homebrewer himself.

His wife Ellen Bounsal is actually the head brewer now, she and her mother are big supporters of our local SPCA.

Beer and dogs, they've got their priorities straight!

Here's our club with Peter during a brewery visit during MiM in 2004. He's the guy in the back row with the jean shirt

Magic Hat Brewery in Burlington, Vermont! :mug:

Is that about an hour and a half out of Montreal? We won't have a rental car, I was hoping for something in montreal...

I'm sure ya can foind sumtin' roit der in Newfoundland, bye. In all seriousness though, you may want to ask at your local Liquor outlet distribution center if they have central locations on the rock like they do out here in BC. If not, I would tend to think somewhere in St. John's would carry it or be willing to order it in.

Replicating it might be a formidable challenge. To me it seems like you'll need a heap of oats. I've made plenty of stout in my time and for a 5 gal batch I would suggest somewhere around two to 3 lbs. I know that may seem excessive but the one pound I put in my smooth stout barely registers against Black Patent and Roasted Barley.

In any case, good luck and happy brewing.

About 2 hours I think. If you're not doing sidetrips it's probably too far. The microbrew industry in Canada is poor at best. There is a company called Unibroue(?), from outside Montreal that makes pretty good beer. I like the Chambly which is sort of a Belgian Wit.

 You Ottawa types need to get out once in a while. Not all Canadian cities roll up the sidewalks at sundown!

Here's a slightly outdated map of a few of them within staggering distance of each other.

and another couple of guides:

One that's not featured is Benelux which is owned by one of our club members and is the starting point for MiM this year:

make sure you go there and ask for Benoit (pronounded Benwah, not Be-noight)

Unibroue is of course world famous (except maybe for Ottawa) for their line of Belgian style beers. It's about half an hour by car. Enjoy!

Well bye, I kant git anytin ere loike youse on da mainland. lol.
Still waiting on an e-mail from the LCBO to see if they will carry it.

I know I'll probably never truely replicate the recipie but I'll come closer to
what I want in a stout. We have a great micro brewery here in the metro
area called Storm Brewing in Newfoundland and I like most of his brews. In
fact I know the brewer. It's just that he don't brew stout. And he don't brew St. Ambroise Oatmeal stout :( .
I hope I get a chance to taste St. A on tap sometime. As I say, The best
I have tasted so far and it certainly didn't let me down as to expectations.
My fellow club member also brought me down a Mill St. Coffee Porter from TO
which was also a great brew.

A few of our guys are also with the MontreALERS and have posted several places which serve great brews in the Montreal area.

Hey, good information. I must admit I'm pretty oblivious to the Montreal beer scene, simply because I don't go there. Plus I spend a good portion of time in the States, which has an amazing microbrew industry.
