Hello,

Wondering if I could get some opinions on a recipe I came up with in BeerSmith. It's for an Amber Ale and I'm looking for a malty, honey-ish, beer with low to moderate hops and I'm not sure if some of my grains might conflict or give some undesired effects. Here it is:

Recipe Specifications
--------------------------
Batch Size: 5.50 gal
Estimated OG: 1.051 SG
Estimated Color: 14.1 SRM
Estimated IBU: 26.8 IBU
Brewhouse Efficiency: 68.00 %
Boil Time: 60 Minutes

Ingredients:
------------
9.00 lb Pale Malt (2 Row) US, Malteurop (1.8 SRM) Grain 78.71 %
0.75 lb Caramel/Crystal Malt - 30L (30.0 SRM)Grain 6.56 %
0.75 lb Melanoiden Malt (36.0 SRM) Grain 6.56 %
0.50 lb Honey Malt (25.0 SRM) Grain 4.37 %
0.25 lb Wheat Malt, Franco Belges (34.5 SRM) Grain 2.19 %
0.13 lb Caramel/Crystal Malt - 80L (108.0 SRM) Grain 1.09 %
0.06 lb Black Malt, De-Bittered, Castle (742.0) SRMGrain 0.52 %
1.00 oz Tradition [4.90 %] (60 min) Hops 16.4 IBU
1.00 oz Liberty [4.70 %] (15 min) Hops 7.8 IBU
1.00 oz Saaz [4.00 %] (5 min) Hops 2.7 IBU
0.28 tsp Irish Moss, Super Moss HB (Boil 10.0 min) Misc
1 Pkgs American Ale (Wyeast Labs #1056) Yeast-Ale
or Denny's Favorite 50

I've got my efficiency at 68% since this is all I'm running using pre-crushed internet ordered grains. I have a barley crusher now and will be crushing all the grains prior mashing. I've set the mash for Single infusion, medium body.

Thanks.

On first glance, I'd say that looks a bit heavy on the crystal, especially with the honey malt in as well. I'd drop the 80L completely and bring the 30L to .5lb. Not sure what the intent of the black malt is (well, I assume color, but it seems really out of place). If you want to darken it up, you could increase the color level of the crystal you're using (60L maybe?).

Id agree with smagee. Id dump black, cara 10 and wheat. Up cara 80 to 3/4 or 1lb. Between that, and melanoiden malt, your color should be good and with the honey and crystal, your flavor should be sweet enough for a good amber.
