I love a deal.... so the nice 5 gallon pickle bucket with lid (and gasket) for $2.00 is a steal..... but it sure smells like pickles.....:D. I let it soak with StanStar overnight and bleach and water 12 hrs.... guess what....yup.. dill pickle.

Any ideas? thought this would be a great grain pail etc....

Thanks,

Dave

Sorry but you'll never get the smell out...the pickling juice penetrates the plastic.

C'mon... gotta be something I can use to get rid of it...lol... it does smell good though..... ok how about a Dill Pickle Draft using a light beer clone? Kinda kidding, kinda serious.

You could try oxiclean. But one or two cheap throw-away batches with dme might work.

But after thinking. After the price of all that you're better off just buying a clean bucket.

There are many threads here about this..... Pickles Will haunt their containers for much longer than it would take to make this any kind of a deal. Chuck it.

If you're willing to spend $2 - $3 a batch to reduce cleaning costs, US plastic has food safe 5 gallon bucket liners. If you're using it for grain/DME then that's a 1 time cost. Another option is the 5 gallon Mylar bucket inserts.

By comparison the "cheap" white buckets from Home Depot with the screw top gasketed lids are about $10.

Let it sit out in the sun for a couple days. The smell will go away. Of course I haven't seen the sun here for a few months.

I copied this from another thread.

" Sorry but the one thing that can't be gotten out of buckets to use them for brewing is pickles....I don't think you'll find one success story in all these threads. The pickling brine penertrates way too deep into the plastic.

As all the above threads have shown, even multiple soakings of oxyclean won't work....If it were that easy there wouldn't be so many threads.

As much as I am all for scrounging, recycling and repurposing, and finding free stuff for our hobby. I have to say pickle buckets really just need to be passed by."

Ask your favorite deli counter for empty frosting buckets. The smell will come out of those with oxyclean and they're food grade plastic (and likely free).

Thanks for finding all the info that has been asked in the past... You may laugh... why not a light beer clone dill pickle flavor..... never know eh? Could be an award winner!

Yeah....burn them.

Then write a note to yourself reminding you to never buy a pickle bucket for brewing again.

Just a suggestion....:cross:
