I like balanced IPAs but I am personally moving more into Belgian sours and trappists as a matter of personal taste. Hops are awesome, but I am sick of hopbombs everywhere.

I make exceptions like that also.
My folks for example aren't going to want me to bring beer to sit around and drink every weekend or whenever they break out the grill.

I make sure to keep mom well stocked with my home brew. She really likes my pale ales/IPA's. I simply bottle up some off of tap/keg and bring them over when needed. She was saving me bottles for a while, but since I don't like to use long necks, I had her stop. She's about to retire and has offered to help out on some brew days, or with other parts of it.

Now if I could only get my sister and bil to stop drinking that [commercial] swill so much.

I usually will just fill a couple growlers off my taps to bring with me when I visit friends and family.

Interesting thread......I too jumped on the IPA bandwagon and bought a 6er of Stones IPA, could not even finish one, gave the rest to co-worker friend.

I have never been a big fan of IPAs. It has been so long since I had one though and IPAs are all anyone I talk to seems to be able to talk about that I got suckered back into trying one and I am again disappointed.

I don't buy beer anymore. I love the beer that I brew but beer isn't something I go out of my way to buy commercially and taste etc. I am really more of a wine drinker.

Anyway, my pipeline ran dry with the cider I am supposed to be drinking now needing more time to age. I have some wine but I really wanted to drink some beer or some cider or some bubbly. My wife was at the stor and I asked her to pick up a sixer for me.

She came home from costco with a 24 pack of Marble Brewery IPA for me. Now I actually LOVE Marble brewery and their IPA has high marks so I figured what the heck.

Yuck. As I am trying to choke down my second, thinking about being stuck with 22 more of these things, I am reminded... I really can't stand IPAs.

Am I the only one? Crazy? Or is there anyone else out there that just doesn't like IPAs?

P.S. As far as beers go I love stouts and the occasional amber also brewing a hefe right now that smells AWESOME and I can't wait to try so its not that I am a beer hater and I try all different styles. IPAs just seem super popular with people and I can't stand them.

You are not the only one. You are not crazy; well at least not for the sole reason of disliking IPA's, you MIGHT have other issues that would qualify you for that descriptor. :fro: I can't stand IPA's.

In my not so humble opinion, IPA's & their variants are some of the nastiest of beer styles. You might as well just press the liquid out of hops & bottle it. I'm not a fan of the ESB's either. "More bitter doen't mean more better."

If somebody wants an IPA or one of its' variants, more for them. They'll never have to worry about me taking their last beer. I'll stick to the maltier side of the brew style chart, but I'm always up for a wee taste of a style I've never had or a new brew of some sort. And I reserve the right to enjoy a RIS or a Nordic juniper ale once in a while.
Regards, GF.

I previously could not stand IPAs. I liked every other style just not IPA. I still remember the first one I ever tried about seven years ago and thinking it was the worst beer ever made. So I never tried another one until a couple years ago and still not too much of a fan. That all changed this year for some reason. I visited Three Floyds and its like a switch flipped. I was drinking a sample of Dreadnaught and it hit me, This is Great! Ever since then I can't get enough IPAs. I never would have thought I'd be a fan of them, but sometimes tastes change I guess.

I have never been a big fan of escorts. It has been so long since I had one though and escorts are all anyone I talk to seems to be able to talk about that I got suckered back into trying one and I am again disappointed.

I don't buy escorts anymore. I love the relations that I have but escorts aren't something I go out of my way to buy commercially and try etc. I am really more of a marriage person.

Anyway, my pipeline ran dry with the babe I am supposed to be wooing now needing more time to develop. I have some older women on the side but I really wanted to try out some young girls. My wife was at the pimp and I asked her to pick up a sixer for me.

She came home from the pimp with 24 escorts for me. Now I actually LOVE pimps and their escorts have high marks so I figured what the heck.

Yuck. As I am trying to choke down my second, thinking about being stuck with 22 more of these things, I am reminded... I really can't stand escorts.

P.S. As far as escorts go I love asians and the occasional latina also thinking about a BBW right now that seems AWESOME and I can't wait to try so its not that I am a BBW hater and I try all different styles. Escorts just seem super popular with people and I can't stand them.

:rockin:

This sounds good, lets try this!!! :mug:

Why don't you just put a pinch between your cheek and gums??

Had the first pint of my MO SMaSH IPA last night... mmmmmm good. Great balance between malt and hop flavors. Great flavors/aromas from the EKG coming through (all 20 minutes from the end forward :rockin:). Not the insane IBU bombs the American breweries seem to be making (for IPAs). At under 50 IBUs, it's damned good in a glass.

I think I am going to try to get some people to come drink it this weekend. I will buy friends using IPA currency cause I don't think I can drink the rest of these. Lol

ESB's generally aren't more bitter. They are more balanced in malt character than IPA's. I have found a lot of people who don't like IPA's will like an ESB. It's all about finding the right beer for you though.

I feel that... ... who am I kidding, I have a bottle of celery seed mead that I liked. Bring it on. Whatever it is.

Yuck.

You need to try the Marble Red. It's just as hoppy as the IPA but is really malty, which kind of balances out the hops.

All kidding aside I am in something of an IPA period. For years I was in a stout period, and now I've moved toward hoppy. Honestly, the only style I have had so far that I dont love drinking are a lot of the lagers I have had, and even then I'm told there are lagers out there that would blow my mind.

I remember not liking IPAs, but it was around the time that I would argue the merits of Miller Lite over Bud Lite.

Growing hops really made me a hop head.

Next time you brew, even if it is a lite lager, get a full on whiff of the hops in the bag.

See if you like the smell. I LOVE it.

Once I made that connection, I tasted not just bitterness, but "Hops". Total mind f*CK. ;)

I chewed on some leaf hops at a group brew I attended recently.

I would do it again (cascade I think? maybe?)

I have found that hop bitterness is a taste one gets acquired to that becomes addictive. The closest thing to this phenomenon I can think of is acquiring a taste for super hot pepper wing sauces. Neither bitterness or blistering heat is something anyone likes the first time they try it but the more they have the more they like it!

Hops (especially Amarillo and Cascade) smell so good to me that I love pouring an IPA and smelling that aroma. It's like crack!

Bitterness = face impossion = nasty
Hop aroma and flavor without being a face impossion = :D :D :D :D :rockin: :ban:

My ~48 IBU English IPA is all flavor and aroma additions (7.5oz all starting at 20 minutes from the end). You get the EKG flavor and aroma for the entire pint. IMO, it's almost orgasmic.

you know, when I started brewing i liked an occasional IPA, and (someone's gonna hit me) Coors Light was my main beer staple because I liked it and I was used to it... now that I started brewing and trying other beers i can't think about taking even a sip of Coors or Bud... they taste like they've gone bad or something... I have to blame it on the absence of Hops... I tried an Arrogant Bastard the other day... what a TREAT!!

Try a Chain Breaker from Deschutes.

mmmmmm... no...

Not about to toss out money on something I suspect I won't like. Being between jobs I'm more selective about what I spend money on. When I'm on another contract, or start a new role, maybe. But, more likely, probably not. I'm perfectly happy drinking my brews made with ale yeast, with no wheat beers, or lagers, in the mix. :D

I like what I like. Sometimes what I like is different than what I liked before. Sometimes its the same.
You should like what you like too. Sometimes what you like will be the same as what someone else likes. Sometimes it will be different.

I think that covers it ;)

LOL! Yeah, that covers it.

As long as everyone is saying what they like to an audience ( that's not right, should it be readience?) that basicly does not give a rip, this old man will say that,IMO,the original, real, un-usurped version of IPA is pretty dang good stuff, that being British of course. Everything else is just trying to use up hops, and was a devious plan instituted by the hop growers of America.

On that, we actually agree.

IMO, you can have great hop flavor and aroma WITHOUT the face implosion that high IBUs will bring. I enjoy the flavor and aroma in my pale ales, but I don't want to have my face pucker up like I just had a turbo-charged lemon crammed in there.

IME, most (not saying all) American IPA's are trying to cram as many IBUs into the bottle as they can. Even a lot of APA's are going that route, using too much hops for IBUs and not enough for flavor and aroma. Oh well, I guess that's another reason why we brew our own. We don't have to drink what a commercial brewery produces and sells. :rockin:

I LOVE an IPA. One IPA is enough though. If I'm having a few, I would much rather have a nice nut brown ale or a pale ale in bunches. IPA is best with steak and potato meals.

I am sure we can agree on more than that. I too am a AHA member and really like the Celtic carved paddle head in your avatar. See, the generation gap might not be too bad after all. :)

Gap might not be as large as you think... Well, maybe it is. I hear you went to grade school with Methuselah. j/k :D

Yeah, and next you'll be another hop head and we can cancel this whole thread! :D

Isn't is sad when that happens? Almost like watching them put down Old Yeller...

NAH!!!! It's more like when (and someone's gonna hit ME for this) you realize that santa isn't real. You are a little sheepish, but glad that you suddenly know what everyone already else already knew.

No no no. It still tastes like ass. It just gets you drunk.

That is step 2 TEXTBOOK!!!!!!!

Step 1 - AHHHH!!! this is crap.

Step 2 - Well crap though it is, it gets you drunk.

Step 3 - "I'll take 3 oz of cascade and 3 oz of magnum......what?.....no it's just one batch.....why?"

It took me a long time to enjoy IPAs, and I still don't enjoy too many of the West Coast hop bombs, but I do enjoy an occasional IPA nowadays. I was drinking Toxic Sludge the lady few days and man is that a good beer.
