Hi everyone I have been brewing now for just over a year I started with wine and about 7 months ago I moved on to brewing beer from kits I am currently about to move from kits to extract brewing with the intention to very shortly after that move to all grain.

The thing Is I have become a little obsessed with brewing and I am driving the wife crazy I was just wondering if I am the only one ?

:)

Youre normal. I have been at it for just about 2 years and I was a little possesed in the beggining too. Once you gather the equipment the spending does slow a bit, so just tell her to be patient you are almost done. Make her a batch that she will appreciate and youre good to go.

Thanks Bob :) she is quite happy to drink it when it's done it's just me talking about it quite alot lol

You are not alone. I'm only 2 months in and totally obsessed, always planning my next beer. My wife doesn't like when I change the subject from whatever she was talking about to beer. Oops. I commonly have good ideas when we are together and just blurt them out. I'm pretty sure that she is getting tired of all the beer talk. I guess I can try to scale it back ; )

Good luck to you as well.

Lol. I do the same. Like u said above "gotta scale it back" I seem to do that a lot bc I'm always scaling forward lol. Just keep her happy and try not to talk about it. Very hard I know lol. It gets better. Mine is finally coming around to it.

I am exactly the same we were at the supermarket the other day and I saw bananas and just started going on about trying to brew a banana ale lol I just couldn't help myself that and many other occasions lol good luck to you as we'll :)

if I'm not brewing, I'm thinking about brewing. or reading about brewing. or thinking about reading about brewing. or posting about brewing. or talking about brewing. or bothering people by talking about brewing.

but that's not obsessive, is it?

I wouldn't say so so that means I'm not obsessive either I do believe the word divorce has been used once or twice though lol :)

My wife just shakes her head a lot. She loves my beer. She also finds some of it interesting--like when we go to a brew pub and ask for a flight of samples and I tell her what to expect in each one and how they actually compare to the style. But other than that I don't really talk to her about beer because I know she doesn't find the details interesting.

I regularly brew a batch that I know she will like, so there is something in the fridge especially for her. She has started telling people at her work about my beer brewing and even taking them samples.

You're definitely not alone, but I'm very sensitive to how much of a topic I make it. I'm thinking about brewing, loving the learning, sharing bits and pieces here and there, but try to keep it at least in some proportion. She's happy that I have many hobbies, and she respects that, but realize that it takes two to tango (raising kids, being happy - both of us). When I hear an even semi-benign "are you brewing again this weekend?" my antennae go up and I often back off my plans. She also hates beer (bad memories of people vomiting in college :D), so I can't use that to my advantage. Although her friends like beer, so I'm planning brews for them to enjoy. No you're definitely not alone. :)

Does she like wine ? If so have you tried making her a couple of gallons of wine to keep her happy ? My wife doesn't mind me making wine as long as she gets plenty of it lol it's just all of the beer talk as I have really got in to that recently although on an upside I have managed to get her drinking ale now :)

I know you arent the only one that has this problem. Just wait until you start all grain brewing and your brew days get a lot longer. of course you can make up for this a little bit by while your grains are steeping finding those little jobs around the house you have been putting off and doing them while checking your grains. I have found by doing that she isnt as upset with the extended process of all grain. :ban:

Great advice thank you seckert :)

of course! disclaimer though! doesnt mean she isnt going to ***** still...it just keeps the bitching to a lower level! haha!

Yep, you have to make something she likes.....or her friends like. It depends what they drink.....it's hard to please a bud light liking person but it can be done. For an easier way, make some wine. Have her help you and she will appreciate it much more. Might I suggest the wine expert white merlot? Easy and good. Just follow the directions. I have a few recipes that the bud light drinkers like. Pm me if you want details.

Luckily, my girl bought me my starter kit as a gift and regularly helps be brew and bottle...

She enjoys it.

my wife likes drinking it and helps me bottle every time! it is length of time on brew day and the constant talking about brewing that irritates her...haha!

Asking a bunch of home brewers if that's normal is like asking if the pope likes catholiscm, lol. I keep one carboy always of cider, apfelwine or wine. She even started doing them on her own while I'm brewing. Besides, at least your not at the bar.

I will check out that recipe :) she is particularly fond of the rhubarb wine I make she can't get enough of the stuff we have just about ran out of it luckily my rhubarb has just started growing again so I should be able to get some more made soon :) as for bud light I have managed to get her liking ales currently but only ones we have bought so far my next brew is going to be a 15 minute cascade IPA I am hoping she will like that one :)

-nah, that's perfectly normal. My wife actually got me into brewing a year or so ago when I was bugging her about the time she spends sewing, knitting, card making, reading, etc...when she said 'you need to get a hobby'. So I combined my two favorite past times, drinking beer and drinking beer. I've been having a great time and am now just getting into wine making.

Hee hee. I started brewing four months ago, and yes, I'm obsessed. We'll see how long it takes to settle down a bit. Only... I'm the wife here. My husband has quit drinking, so that's good and bad. Bad because I have to find other friends to share with and obsessively talk about how it tastes, but good because there's more for me! Thank goodness for a great, local homebrew club here in Northern CA.

Wy wife hates when I talk beer around her so I try very hard not to. She also does not really care for the beer or wine that I have made, though there are a few that she will drink every now and then. It's a good thing I have friends that brew and am the member of a large homebrew club so I can geek out without getting on her nerves. Honestly, I'm glad I have a hobby that she doesn't care about, it's the only time that I get to myself!

Man your husband doesnt know what he has there! he is a lucky man! Oh and by the way as long as you are brewing it doesnt ever really settle down!:tank:

Completely agree with you on this one :)

Started brewing about three months ago and am always on HBT on my phone researching the next brew, learning techniques, troubleshooting problems, etc...didn't really notice how much until she actually said one day after asking me for the 100th time in a week..."what are you looking at on your phone?"...when my answer was again "beer"...she said "I almost miss when you used to just surf porn"

Lmao absolutely love it I just wish I had more room so I could brew even more :) I practically live on here as well lol

best advice I can give is buy Dr, John Grays book men are from mars and women from venus! I bought this and read a few pages per day, my wife started reading it too. We are learning alot about the other sex, Go buy her her favorite candy bar, or somthing simple, youll get points and it might soften her a little on th beer obsession.

My best advice- find a beer she likes. Make it a Quest. Then there is a common interest. And tastes change as people learn to drink it and expand their tastes.

For me at least when I brew it is my time and I am lucky enough to have a wonderful wife that understands it. I have stopped talking to her about it because her eyes would glaze over though.

She kind of got a shock though when she got here. I asked her what she would like for me to brew for her and she said some vodka so she could make a mixed drink she likes. I guess it is legal to distill in NZ and she was bummed that I would not distill here in America

NZ is one of the few countries where it is legal

My fiancé suggested I build an electric brewery after we get the wedding paid for. WOOT! Apparently cutting 4-8 hours out of my brew day is a good investment. Then again, all grain takes me a lot longer then it should.
