Purchased an aquarium heater multi temperature control on it, am I best to either.
1: place cord through a rubber bung in top of my fermentation bucket directly into wort, or
2: place bucket in another larger bucket of water with the heater in that ?
Is one way likely to be better than the other

Your temperature control of the beer will be better with option 2 as the heater must have a little difference between its turn on temp and turn off temp. The larger volume will dampen those.

I agree with Bleme, I don't want anything but beer inside my fermenter.

agreed. I have had an aquarium heater explode in my water bath before. I couldn't imagine how pissed I would be if it happened in my beer.
I used a floating thermometer in the water bath to make sure everything is were its supposed to be.

Thanks all will go with putting in water bath then was just concerned with the difference in wort and water temperatures
