Hi everyone,

I transfered my elderberry wine to their respective secondary containers today. I did not take a hyrometer reading because I was being all nutty about sanitation and it slipped my mind.

I did taste it though. It is quite dry but not objectionable at all. One thing I noticed is that it is quite powerful in the alcoholic department. Now I wish I had tested it.

Think I could get away with lowering my hyrometer taped to a string into the carboy?

I am just glad my experiment is on track so far,

Just for safetys sake I wouldn't do it! You might be fine but if the tape let go then you would have more of a problem getting it back out. Just use your hose and get enough off for your test.

This is the reason they made wine thiefs. Turkey basters can also work.
Taping string to the hydrometer is going to affect the weight and readings of the device. Hydrometer are very sensitive devices and even a couple tenths of a gram will throw it way off.
