Well I decided to go ahead and try making some kombucha tea. I picked up a bottle of Reeds gojiginger tea as it stated it had a live culture and couldn't find any original , plain tea.

I made up a starter of black tea with cane sugar and now almost a week with the reeds tea , i'am starting to see some action.

Don't get too concerned about the size of the scoby on the first batch - it may be thin. The second and subsequent batches should form scobys much quicker and thicker (my experience).

speaking of first SCOBY's, I got myself a bottle of GT's today. there's a decent sized floaty in there. is that mass a scoby and if it is, could I harvest it?

nice! thanks for the info! I'm very excited to start my first batch, but I'll be off line for a week. when I get back I'll ask some more detail questions in this thread.
