I'm considering buying a light duty transmission cooler to use as a immersion wort cooler. Anyone ever done this?
 
I'd think they would use cheaper lead based solders for those. Seen them used as a glycol prechiller.
 
I am sure that a transmission cooler/necessary parts would be more expensive than the pre-made copper coils available at my brewstore. You can make your own for even cheaper, and no need to worry about non-food safe materials.
