I'm not understanding the purpose of this thing. What is supposed to be the advantage of using it?

So you crush your grain into this, then hang it over your mash tun and open valve letting teh grain fall slowly into the water as you stir?

sketerbuck looking good, great project.
What is the funnel diameter and who is the vendor?

Yes, turn on the mixer, adjust the flow, walk away to do other brewing jobs.
A great time saver, just kidding.

I do the same thing, my grain hopper is suppose to be part of the automated grain processing system.
The grain hopper I use is a modified water bottle with a cone insert.
