Chicago was the first city eliminated for hosting the 2016 olympic games.

I think it's hillarious that everybody thought Chicago had it in the bag because Obama and Oprah campaigned for it.

Well one of two (Tokyo being the other). Smart money is on Rio. Never been an Olympics in South America

It is heartening to know that the rest of the world is not under the same spell of idol worship which is gripping the US.

Thank God, let Rio have the abortion. It probably didn't help that Oprah, Obumma and Richie hyped the crap outta it with the IOC, when the IOC knew that the majority of people in the city never really wanted it.

Sucks that we're not getting it. I don't understand why US people were rooting against the US, but oh well. Forest for the trees I guess.

Me? I'm always up for the Olympics or some other big event to come on by! At least this makes us a more likely contender in the upcoming World Cup decisions.

But in the end, Rio deserved it and was definitely going to get it; South America needs an Olympics. I'm happy for them to have it this time around.

Why would we not want the most nostalgic sports event the course of the world has ever seen in our home country? Too bad for Chi town :(

Not going to get into another debate over this , but 45%(at most) is NOT "the majority of people."

+1 to that. I think the odds are in our favor on the World Cup bid, too.

I lived in Atlanta for the 96 games and security and traffic were a nightmare. In the post 9-11 world I would have definitely moved before the games came to town

Seriously? For all of our bravado we (the US) has, we do end up living life scared, and letting worthless pieces of scum change our basic daily habits and lives.

Sometimes I envy the Brits. Biggest subway attack in the nation's history, and the next day it's open and has the busiest day ever as a show of solidarity. No Brit was going to back down to a two-bit terrorist; they stood strong.

:off: Sorry, pet peeve of mine!

I was in the LA area for the their Olympics, what a waste! Everyone was so panicked about the crowds that it was the lowest tourism year of the decade. Lots of companies when belly-up planning for things that didn't happen. The only good thing that came out of it was the re-labeling of the highways with numbers, names and directions that made sense. As in, the Santa Monica freeway does not go to Santa Monica, the 91 had FIVE names in 10 miles depending on location AND direction, etc.

I went to the LA Olympics. Amazing time. I stayed at the Beverly Hilton in a Sponsor's Suite for the entire two weeks. Everything at the hotel was comped, including appetizers from Trader Vic's each evening in the room plus private fashion shows around the pool each day. Bollinger RD was the poolside aperitif 24/7. Our host, my friend's father, hired a different escort each night for the entire stay. Although he never got us any. :( He must have spent 5 grand per night on them. And this is in '84 dollars.

If I ever go to the olympics again I really have to meet another best friend whose father is one of the sponsors. ;)

google is a great thing.....China spent 44 BILLION to put on the Olympics, and made a profit of 146 MILLION....no its not all about money, but that is just stupid, no matter how good or bad the economy. The "birds nest" as it is called had held one event in the last 13 months, and most of the other venues are being TORN DOWN....couple all of that with the most corrupt city/state in the western world.......

just my opinion!

I don't care about the Olympics one way or the other. It has always pissed me off how it sets the politics of one nation against another, like the boycotts in the 80's between the US and the Soviets.

However, this is the first time I've ever seen a party political split in the country of a prospective host city. I find it really fooking pathetic how this failed bid by Chicago was seen as a vote of incompetence by this nations President. He took a day off from being president to try to sway the chances of the US to highlight one of it's cities. He could have taken weeks of to pretend to clear brush on his ranch (If he had one) But this whole event has simply been taken over by the haters to project it as a monumental failure of the presidency.

Get over it, it's just a failed Olympics bid, there are several of them every four years. Don't the haters have anything more worthy to do than magnify every single failure out of all proportion?

This. Get over it people. I don't remember such a split over New York.

Not to mention the last summer games we had (Atlanta), it got bombed by a right-wing nutcase. Look at the present climate here. The IOC would have to be the biggest morons on earth to have voted for Chicago.

I'm just waiting for all the B-roll of hot Latin babes in tiny bikinis! That's a huge win for us Mid-Westerners with our snow cows and hometown heifers.

I spend a lot of time on college campuses. A large minority (40% or more) of coeds are overweight and that number just goes up drastically as they age.

the only ones that would have benefited would be obamas liberal croneys labor union bosses, politicians, the mayor, acorn.ect. therest of the city would have gotten trashed by this...

Obama was a Lakeside Liberal... they don't get along all that well with the political machine in Chicago...

Either way, he wasn't involved in politics long enough to get too much of that baggage.

Without a doubt, the IOC was listening when nearly 3 million tea baggers voiced their displeasure at village meetings through out Denmark.

And if the Olympics were won under the previous administration the talk would have all been about the boon for the tourist industry and trickle down economics. We've heard the same old poo from both sides long enough.

When you're dealing with that kind of narrow-minded mentality, you're talking to a wall. A lib is a lib is a lib, as far as they're concerned.

I thought at least you would pick up the dig that he isn't qualified...

:fro:

That was why I didn't bother to respond when I first read his post...just another knucklehead trying to make a political slam over something he knows nothing about.

I've REALLY got to find a yawn emoticon !

Maybe they were creeped out that Michelle Obama was sitting on her daddy's lap watching the Olympics when she was 20 years old.....LOL

Rio better get on the ball, b/c their infrastructure is still very third-world. For example, their sewage system cannot handle toilet paper. Oh they have flush toilets, but you are told when you check in at your 5-star hotel not to flush toilet paper down the toilet for this very reason. What do you do with it then? Toss it in the trash and let the housekeeping people pick it up in the morning. Try not to think about the smell in your hotel room.

Where I live, the electricity is still supplied by overhead cables on poles instead of underground. The power goes out during every thunderstorm. The rainwater from the rooftops is dumped directly onto the ground instead of into the public drainage system. Cable TV shares the same overhead lines as the electricity and telephone lines. The water is over chlorinated because the filtration system can't handle the amount of duck poo in the reservoir. When it comes to infrastructure, this is the most third world place have ever lived. That includes (Very) rural France and South Africa.

I like it a lot here, but i don't live under any of the illusions that are sold to me by the loud voices. America needs a LOT of repair work. I love America, but honestly, she needs a major face lift if we are not going to be compared to third world countries down the line.
