or you could get a sanke keg, the plastic would be fine for a primary
 
Is there a DIY out there that converts a sanke to a conical? If not how about a way to get an air tight seal after you cut it open to put the ball valve in?

They have been very valuable in any kitchen I have ever worked in! Never had to buy new ones though!! They last forever.

I guess paying that price for bins in a commercial kitchen makes sense, especially if they last forever. No way I can come up with that sort of jack for residential use though. (I wish I could they look nice).
 
There is a mircobrew pub near me that ferments in 55 gal food grade barrels. He drops in a food grade liner and away he goes. No clean up either, just drop in a new liner and you're good to go again.
