Winterizing hop plants

I had my first year hops planted in 5 gallon buckets and a couple of large tubs. We are reaching freezing nighttime temperatures here in VA now, do I need to take the tubs inside or will they be alright outside? I hope to put them in the ground come spring but might have to wait another year before I have time and space for that.

Same boat as your in. I just trimmed then buried them in leaves and pine straw and yard stuff to keep the frost off

Hadn't even thought to trim them so you are one step ahead of me.

Most people seem to trim them 3-4 inches above the ground, and then cover them in compost.

I bury my tubs to ground level and compost them just like my actual hop yard hills. In the spring I pull them out let them grow.
