There was a brewery in town that closed not too long ago. They had so-so recipes but a huge infection issue that never went away - I guess they were forced to choose between selling known 'bad' beer...

Some people have issues with acetic acid production when using buckets - I'd make sure they are as air-tight as possible, or invest in a couple Better Bottles strictly for sours.

Any special steps to inoculating a barrel with bugs/brett? Or would just racking a sour into it get the process going?

Those Balcones 5 gallon barrels?

I recently bought one of the 5 gallon used whisky barrels from Balcones. My question is, are these truly 5 gallons or 20 liters (5.3 gallons). I'd prefer to fill this to the brim.

I'd simplify the center shape and just make it a hole. You might also want to make the area the text is in fatter so that it has more breathing room. I like the direction you're going in, though. :)

Mine have totally been worth it. I have a house culture that's a mix of Wyeast lambic blend, a ton of commercial dregs, and some wild yeast. They're turning out consistently funky and delicious.
