I suggested the airlock just to fill the hole in the lid. You probably already have the lid and airlock ready to use anyway. Sanitized foil over it will work fine also.

Those neck handles should be taken off the store shelves. Picking up a full carboy with one of those is just a disaster waiting to happen and will probably happen faster than just using your hands...
