Yeah I learned that one the hard way when I wanted to speed up some dough rising (house was super cold at the time) and threw it in the microwave. That dough didn't rise at all afterwords...

Don't worry about it. Beer usually tastes pretty rank while its still fermenting, as the yeast hasn't had a chance to clean up after itself.
It is good idea to taste during the process a few times...

Never gotten a good trub cone from a whirlpool. I use pellet hops and a keggle.The bottom shape on the keggle doesn't really seem too conducive to cone forming.

Check to see if any liquor stores around you save boxes. I've gotten beer boxes from BevMo, and Costco usually has stuff that'll work well enough
