Whoa I totally missed that this was that old of a thread. Obviously my problem was a different issue than the OP's. It sounds like the home brewer mills that many brew shops use just aren't cut out...

I'd go with a chest type cooler for the mash tun instead of the 5 gallon Gatorade type upright ones. Mine is 48quarts and I have no problems with making 5 gallon big beers like barley wines and RIS...
