Get the best of both worlds and line a cooler with a grain bag and then batch sparge. This is what I do and I'm convinced its the best method for me. I can easily hold my mash temp due to the...

If I were doing a partial mash, no way I'd try to do a full boil. I'd get by on as little water as possible and then top off (with ice cold water) to 5.5 gallons in the fermenter. This will make...

As Jdm61 said, because of todays well modified malt it is no longer required to do a step mash. That doesn't mean that there is nothing to be gained by doing a decoction. That is what my question...

What would happen if you pulled off some thick mash after the initial infusion at about 20-30 minutes, boiled then cooled it and then added it back to the mash?

Decoction question

I do single infusion batch sparge beers. Is there a way to do a decoction without having to to any steps? Will this even be worth the trouble?

You can always sparge more and then boil down to your desired volume into the fermenter. Might require a really long boil and make the bittering hops edition tricky.

Thanks everyone, I'll sample in about a week and hope for the best. So if I don't detect DMS after primary it won't develop over time?

Can of corn

If you didn't sufficiently boil, how long until the dreaded corn flavor presents itself? I did a mocktoberfest last weekend that was 40% pilsner and only did a 60 minute boil. I'd like to know...

At $2.00/lb and 5.5 gallon batches, I'm not sweating the waste. It's real easy to know what your gravity will be based on lbs of grain and preboil volume. No other measurements or calculations are...

That's not what I'm saying at all. I have volume marks on my mash paddle so I just make sure I have at least enough sparge water and the drain until I hit my pre boil volume. Done. Why would I...

Hmmm, not sure about any of that. Every sparge addition is diluting the wort. That's just common sense. Whether you can reach your target OG without over-saprging is another question entirely. At...

If you batch sparge, you aren't losing wort per se. You should (roughly) know based on your system what gravity you will hit given lbs of grain and preboil volume. No need to worry about a dead...

I don't understand why people worry about deadspace. Can't you just continue to sparge until you get the preboil amount you need?

Just keep sparging until you hit your pre-boil volume. However, this was not the reason for your low efficiency. If anything you collected too much wort. Getting that last bit from the deadspace...
