The biggest part of your problem is your inlet restriction on the pump (aka the 1/4" bk drain). Centrifugal pumps don't like to have their inlets restricted. It may not be the answer you were...

I use pressure canned wort for starters, and usually starsan's enough to take care of the erlenmeyer...I was in a hurry and forgot I'd just done a starter for a barrel.

There's a bunch of people who do one gallon batches around here, just make sure you're fermenter has a good blow off tube or a decent amount of headspace to keep the mess under control.

For the kegs I've got without pull up pressure relief valves, I tend to use a spare Gas QD to vent kegs, though that is using pin lockss.
