I brewed this last year, with mixed results. It finally mellowed out after a few months but early on the "cat-pee" aroma/taste was awful. But like I said it did mellow out over time and I drank it...

I have bagged my pellets for years, it helps to keep the trub down. But others are right, the dip tube is mainly used to make the draining of liquid more efficient without having to tilt the kettle

I agree with the rice hulls, but I think 1 pound is too much. I usually just throw in a double handful, works for me.
