I think the reason for 2 pumps on a single tier system is for sparging. You can probably get away with one pump if you want to keep switching lines during sparge. Hlt -> mlt (switch) mlt -> bk.

If you're sure temp isn't an issue, I would suspect the lines next. With a larger diameter line, there's not enough resistance to keep the co2 in the beer.

I have the sq14. it does fine with my 5 gal batches (7.5 gal full boil), and I can usually get at least 4 batches from a tank of propane.

Don't forget, once you set the regulator and get it dialed in, you'll rarely have to look at it. My regulator is right on the other side of my kegerator and i don't think i've seen it for 4 months.

I try to do it when I finish a keg -- makes it easier when i'm ready to hook up the next keg. sometimes i'm lazy and do it every other keg though.. so maybe 2-3 months at most.

One of the things that helped me out early on was...

One of the things that helped me out early on was a pump.. it was nice not to have to lift the mash tun, or buckets of water.

After that, a brew stand to connect the pump to was nice too :-)
