Yeah, in a pinch the case (plastic tube) will work, but they kind of leak.

I tried it cause I broke my test jar when I broke the hydrometer... they both fell off the table together.

No, no, no... Mash at the appropriate temp (150-155), but sparge at 170, (THE SPARGE WATER SHOULD BE 170). The higher sparge temp will stop conversion and thin out the wort making it a little easier...

After recirculating your mash, connect your HLT to the pump and let the MLT drain...

At two weeks I think its safe to say she's done, sometimes they will bubble for a while after they are done as leftover CO2 comes out of solution, especially if it warms up. I'd feel fine racking...

I'm sure other guys will chime in... but a starter over 1.040 is too heavy, 1.030-1.040 is ideal. The point of a starter is to grow up your yeast cell count, not to acclimate it to a big heavy wort....
