You could split the mash, but then combine before you start boiling. You could also mash as much as possible, then sparse until you get the required pre-boil volume. That's what I do for 2.5 gal...

I get a stale taste if I carb with high psi. Instead I prime with sugar, just like bottles, then in 2 weeks hook it up to co2 at serving psi.

Inside means there is one less entry point into the inside to allow for the cold air to escape, otherwise having it inside just takes up room for more kegs or bottled beers. It's totally up to you.
