I've been doing some SMaSH brews just for this reason. I can definitely spot 2-Row malt now and starting to get a feel for hops- especially cascade.

I made a cheap wort chiller with parts from HD a couple months ago. I think it cost me ~$25 and cools a 5 gallon full boil in less than 30 minutes. Highly recommend it if you can afford it....

Good luck! I am a new AG brewer myself. My advice for your first batch is to keep some extra sparge water on hand as well as some cold water in case you have problems with temps using the new cooler....
