Adapters to use standard CO2 on a soda stream exist. Price is decent too if I remember. Google around, one company might be Soda Doctor, Soda Stream Doc, or something like that.

Soda is carbed significantly higher than beer (8-10pst vs. 30ish), so using beer bottles for soda is a bad idea. Find a glass Coke bottle & compare the weight to a beer bottle.

It's a carbonator as KevinM said, basically the guts out of any soda fountain you'll find today. I paid around $150 for a whole used & abused soda fountain that had on. New or good shape used I think...

Mine leaks a fair bit. Quite a few bottles don't fit the threads quite right & the ball lock connector leaks a lot as well.
