checked my notes, the gravity wasn't as high as I thought, around 1.059. If it was the primary cake i would probably just go for it, but maybe washing and going to a starter is the best way to go.

I'm almost positive that the "booster" is corn sugar (dextrose), which will bump up the gravity of your beer and give you more alcohol in your finished beer.

Like Grinder said, the mash temp is the real key. If you missed you mash temperature by 10 degrees you must have missed the strike water temp by abut 15-20, hard to say without knowing how much heat...

I doubt slow drains would be a problem, it seems like with the insurance provided by 2 extra layers of sediment screen you'll be able to stir the wort a little if the coarsest filter begins to stick....
