Since you can't put the heating element in the mash, you need to remove the wort from the mash to heat it and then put it back. Rims / herms or other will all have that same basic function.

When this happens to me I just lower the regulator setting to 8 PSI or so and start drinking. The first 4 or 5 pints are foamy and it slowly goes away as I pour more pints.

The heat will most definitely cause them to fail and when they fail, mine have failed in the on position. This also cooked a heating element when powering my system since the pumps hadn't primed.

1500 watts will increase the temp in your hlt about 2 - 4 degrees per minute depending on how much sparge water is in there. In an hour tap water would be up to 180 ish
