That controller looks pretty good. It is less expensive than the Johnson controller, and, it handles both hot and cold. Unless the shipping costs are crazy high, go for it.

It is possible the liquid extracts are oxidized, and may not taste good, but they might not be bad as well. Since the gear you got was free, you may as well use it, with new yeast and hops of course....
