I do a full-boil all-grain, but I boil my top-off water beforehand and let it sit, either in the freezer in summertime, or like now, when it's 25 degrees outside, I just let it sit in the cold where...

I tried stirring it up tonight with my sanitized spoon, just to see if I get any airlock activity by tomorrow. If not, I'm planning on buying some yeast. Sigh.

Yeah I don't think it's infected. I don't know if the starter fermented normally, I got lazy and didn't take a hydrometer reading of the beer in the starter. But my beer smells normal right now. I...

6 days later, the beer didn't ferment

So, I looked through all the FAQs and wiki, and while there's tons of info on relaxing, taking hydrometer readings, generally dealing with no bubbles in your airlock, there's not much on what to do...

I'm guess I'm gonna just go for it and pitch as I usually would. It doesn't smell like, to borrow a phrase from Revvy, "week old gorilla poop in a diaper left on the side of the road in the heat of...

I washed some yeast in March - still good?

I ended up with 4 Mason jars of California Ale yeast from White Labs that I washed from one of my primaries. I've used 3 of them with no problems, great beers. Today I made a starter for my next...

I still have my other problem, though - when measuring the temp of my sparge water my electronic thermometer says 178 and my old-school one says 165. Which one are you more likely to trust? They've...

Never mind, I just opened my mash cooler up to check again (25 minutes into mashing) and the thermometer read dead-on 150. I guess I forgot to RDWHAHB... although it's only 10 am here.

My mash temp is too low, will this kill me?

I think my electronic thermometer decided to go nutty on me this morning. When I poured my grain into my cooler with the 170 degree water, I took a temp reading just like I always do. Instead of...

I will, as always, take your advice. I've already made my starter in an Erlenmeyer flask, so I guess I'll just take that and make another, larger starter out of it. Just curious, what kind of...

Making 2 clones and using the same primary bucket, which would you do first?

Hi all,

Been brewing for 3 years and have never tried a clone, so I decided to try two of them that use the same yeast. I've also never tried the method of transferring the first beer to...

Thanks guys. I wasn't overly worried and now I'm not worried at all.

In fact, Yoop, this is the same lager you were giving me advice on before I brewed it - so I brought the wort down to 56...

Is it bad to do a diacetyl rest after transferring to secondary?

I just moved my Mexican Pilsner from primary to secondary and realized I screwed up - the instructions said to bring it up to 60 degrees first for 1-2 days, then transfer.

So after transferring, I...

I've seen people say they use sanitized foil before but I never knew why. Now you've convinced me that that's what I should be doing for a starter.

One question, the description for Star San says...

yeah, I actually have been making 500mL starters.

Are you saying replace the airlock NOW, while the starter is still fermenting? Can I get away with not doing that?

Along the same line of questioning, I have a Mexican Pilsner in secondary that was much cloudier than I had anticipated. I've just completed a 24-hour diacetyl rest at 60-65 degrees, and am in the...

Is it a problem if my krausen blows straight through my airlock?

(edit: This is about a starter, not a 5 gallon batch of wort)

About a year ago I bought a 1L Erlenmeyer flask to make starters in, and I've made one for every brew ever since, regardless of OG. ...

Hey thanks guys. My question wasn't really about decanting before pitching - I do plan to refrigerate and decant for that.

I was asking, if I'm stepping up the starter, do you also refrigerate...

Do you decant your starter before you add more wort to it? (for hi-gravity beer)

Hi all, I'm brewing an IPA recipe with White Labs California Ale yeast (WLP001) and because the OG is supposed to be above 1.080 I'd like to take my starter and add more wort before I brew 4 days...
