I had a few beers ready for the competition anticipating that the submission deadline was coming up and then I checked with the county fair and saw that the competition was cancelled. Does anyone...

modern equivalent of 1950s-60s British "crystal malt"

This past weekend, I brought a keg of "Cream of Three Crops" to a party and, lo and behold, I came across a former homebrewer. He's a mid-70s British guy who was very excited to know that I was a...

My first extract brew and first all grain brews...

My first extract brew and first all grain brews were nut brown ales so I would suggest a nut brown ale. As a bonus, it's a pretty forgiving style and kind of difficult to screw up too bad.

I accidentally got crushed grain from them recently. I have my own mill so I typically get uncrushed (and subsequently crush the hell out of it). I thought their crush looked kind of bad but then...

I mixed the sugar, lactose, ginger, and lime zest and simmered for about 15 minutes. It started at about 1.053 and fermented down to about 1.001. I thought there would be a bit more residual sugar.

I made two heatsticks. I needed two of them to get up to a boil but it was a very vigorous boil. I just took one out and the remaining one was enough to maintain the boil. I guess I was just lucky.

Is malt conditioning worth it?

I should start by saying that I haven't had any issues with stuck sparges or anything like that. This is more due to the fact that I like to tinker.

I'm grinding my grain for brewing tomorrow...
