I think you'll find that recirculating is not a substitute for stirring when direct heating. You'll probably still have a good chance of temperature stratification and scorching.

I don't know the science that you're looking for, but logic says that if bad volatiles are removed in the steam, a one hour boil with 2 gallons of boil-off would be essentially the same as a 90...

70-73 is a bit high for most ale yeast if you looking for a clean IPA profile. If you're saying you can do lager temperatures, I'd start it in the mid 50's and let raise to your ale temperature.

Funny how in the BeerSmith recipe you linked to, the name is American Pale Ale, yet he calls the style a Blonde Ale....
