You should take atleast 45min to an hour to do your sparge. This could be why your efficiency was so low. You probably did not thoroughly rinse all of the sugars out of the grain.

I use brown bottles for nearly all of my bottling, but I like to use a couple clear bottles (usually newcastle) in each batch, just to monitor the bottle conditioning stage. It works really nicely.

Also, how important is it to get champaigne type bottles? I was hoping to just use regular beer bottles. Will this work. I'm assuming that I won't be able to carbonate as much. Is this right?
