I just pour my wort through a double mesh strainer after cooling then wire whisk the hell out of it and top off.
BTW, I have only done extract batches and I use dry or liquid yeast and never had one...

Temp is not a big issue after primary...

Temp is not a big issue after primary fermentation is done. I usually go 3 weeks on my wheats letting the temp rise (I stop adding ice to my swamp cooler) after the first week or so.

Would need the date from your yeast to know for sure but Yeastcalc.com says for a lager and a yeast date of may 5th (just for grins) that a 2.5ltr starter is fine.
Go there and play with the numbers.

I believe that once primary fermentation is done you can let the temps rise for most beers. I use a swamp cooler and usually stop adding ice after about 5 days + or - a day

Unfortunately my water temp will be closer to 80 by August. St Louis area gets big temp swings. I bought a pond pump to recirculate ice water in a cooler once I get the temp down some.
