I have the same 2 tap kegerator set-up as you and I am using priming sugar to carb one or two kegs outside the fridge. Works great and keeps options available all the time.

Did you seal the keg with a little CO2? Maybe the lid wasn't sealed fully...

I would think 66 degrees would be fine for natural carbing.

Cabbie - My new TAD had a red ring that held the cartridge holder to the TAD. I simply removed that and it created enough room to pierce the CO2 cartridge. You might give that a try.
