See, I've made three 'English' type beers, all with fuggle hops. They all have this sort of basement, cellar-floor-y smell/taste to them. I can't tell if my beer is **** or if it's the hops.

Like, are fuggles a kind of hop that might make a beer undrinkable to someone who dislikes that kind of hop?

Take a lighter to it. If it glows red and doesn't burn, it's SS. If it burns, you got gypped. It will be an issue-- those synthetic ones can't handle the temps.

I had good results with an un-reinforced SS braid. I quickly upgraded to a false bottom, though. Totally worth it.

I wouldn't sample from the carboy with a refractometer. The alcohol changes the liquid density and that can throw off the reading a lot. I would just take normal hydro readings post-ferm.
