I feel like it added just a touch of heat and an enormous amount of flavor, and the ones in the boil might not have...

It is more difficult to get a sweet and carbonated cider, but there are methods.

I prefer a dry, highly carbonated cider. Some people add juice to their glasses to sweeten

After saving up 50-60 bottles, even if I give some away and never see them again, it isn't hard to replenish my stock by buying a 6 pack.

This sounds like good news to me!

As others have said, cider can make some weird smells and usually needs to be aged for awhile to really clean itself up nicely.
