I make my pale ale with 4 additions of cascade...

I make my pale ale with 4 additions of cascade and then dry hop with simcoe. For me this combination works. It's not overly complex but hey.. it's a pale ale, nice and smooth.

I also never mash out. I recirculate my mash since I have a HERMS. I will most definitely give this a try, although I am a bit skeptical since it may wreck the efficiency that I'm used to.

I'm not sure how that would help once the wort is flowing and the potential of a leak that's letting air in is still present. I would slow your flow rate way down and see if you're getting bubbles...

perhaps one of your fittings on the pump or valve is letting air in the lines. This could cause bubbles/foam. Also, is the whirlpool arm submerged?
