Yeah, I've done the syringe trick many times. You DO NOT want to do it on any "normally" carbonated beer or it makes a huge foamy mess.

It does work quite well though.

Yeah, anywhere from 12-24 hours. What's great for me (since I brew later at night) is I can finish brewing, come home from work the next day, and aerate and pitch.
