I stopped at Home Depot today to get some 3/8"...

I stopped at Home Depot today to get some 3/8" sweat fittings, and all they had were 3/8" caps and 3/8" couplings... nothing else. The guy there told me that HD is phasing out the 3/8" stuff.

I've done a 5 gallon American Wheat, a 10 gallon Dunkelweizen, and a 10 gallon Multigrain Red... batch sparged all, and never had a problem with the grain bed. Vorlauf was 3 quarts for each batch.

I'm far from an expert, with only 12 brewing sessions under my belt, but here's what I would do. Rather than risk some off flavors from the Amber DME, I'd smack the pack and see how fast it pops up....

Maybe a piece of plywood on the shelf to spread the weight around. Unless you're worried about where the shelf mounts to the sides of the freezer, in which case, I'd use some 2x2's to make legs.

Mine had something like that, it was a red plastic button that I had to push down and there was a box with a magnet, a battery, and time circuitry that kept that button down for 15 minutes at a time....
